NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 12/09/2024
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Tony Talbot, Victoria State Manager at Brooks Australia, talking about how more than three million Australians are at risk of sleeping through fire dangers. This Fire Protection Month, Brooks Australia is reminding people with a hearing impairment and their loved ones to put in place measures to ensure their safety in the event of a fire. With an estimated one in six Australians impacted by hearing loss, around 3.6 million are at risk of sleeping through danger. In fact, research from Brooks Australia reveals over half (53%) of those who are hard of hearing don’t wear their hearing aids or cochlear implants while they sleep. With most residential fires occurring at night, it’s concerning that a quarter (25%) of Australians believe their elderly relatives would sleep through a smoke alarm. Even more concerningly, half (50%) of Australians are worried that their relatives could not escape a house fire in time, with low mobility and being hard of hearing topping the list as the biggest barriers to getting out safely. Shanae White, Queensland STEM Excellence Award Recipient, talking about receiving Queensland STEM Excellence award. Ngunnawal Blackwater State High School Year 12 student Shanae White’s passion for medicine began while witnessing her grandfather’s battle with brain cancer. When Shanae submitted her application for the 2024 Peter Doherty Awards, she thought it was a one in a million chance. But on 13 August she joined 27 others at the ceremony to receive the prestigious award and share in prize money. The Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in STEM highlight the exceptional achievements of Queensland students, teachers and schools. After her first camp, the STEM Girl Power program, Shanae found the value in persistence and applying for every opportunity available. This attitude has Shanae participating in events at universities such as UQ or QUT, travelling interstate, and of course winning a prestigious STEM award. Congratulations, Shanae and Good Luck for the future!
