NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 11/09/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Kaylene Matthews, Acting Midwifery Unit Manager at the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, talking about how Queensland’s first ever publicly funded homebirth program is now live on the Sunshine Coast. The new Queensland home birthing program formally began on July 1, with three mums in the final stages of their pregnancy already signed up. Queensland mums can finally have their baby at home, where they feel most safe and comfortable, without needing to pay for a private midwife. When the time comes, a trained midwife attends the mother’s house to support her through the birth, regardless of whether it happens on a bed, couch, floor, shower or in a backyard. They will even be armed with an inflatable pool for those seeking a water birth. You can express your interest in a homebirth by talking to your GP or sending an email to SC-MGP@health.qld.gov.au.

Senator Jana Stewart, Chair of The Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, talking about the Public hearing for inquiry into improving the economic self-determination for First Nations Australians. The Committee is looking forward to hearing firsthand from Victoria’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations at the forefront of business enterprise, about the barriers to and opportunities for economic development for First Nations people. Other First Nations organisations will provide insights into opportunities offered by Treaty and renewable energy projects for boosting the First Nations workforce and unlocking economic potential.
