NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 13/09/2024
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Miranda Bain, Director of Therapy Services at Act for Kids, talking about the Queensland sporting legends racing to help neglected and abused children. Every year between 45,000 to 50,000 children in Australia are confirmed to have experienced abuse and neglect – enough kids to fill up a football stadium. In the last financial year, Act for Kids has supported 13,808 Queensland kids and 11,669 parents. In fact, emotional abuse was the most common type of maltreatment (57%) among the 45,400 Australian children confirmed to have experienced abuse during 2022-23. Now, Queensland sporting greats including Former Wallabies Captain Stephen Moore, Retired Boxer Jeff Horn, and Firebirds Netballer Lara Dunkley are taking a stand to sell out the ‘Stadium of Hope’ – a virtual stadium to help children and families who have experienced maltreatment.

Jedess Hudson, Artist and Chair Designer, talking about YINDI Bringing Cultural Significance and Modern Functionality to Workspaces. Officeworks, Australia’s leading retailer for technology, office supplies, furniture, stationery, and learning and development resources, is reinforcing its commitment to supporting local partners and giving back to the community. Officeworks is expanding its range of office supplies by partnering with YINDI Manufacturing, an Indigenous Australian company dedicated to creating exceptional office furniture and plastics. This collaboration will introduce locally produced chairs upholstered with patterned fabrics designed by Aboriginal artist Jedess Hudson. Each piece is designed as a unique piece of art, inspired by her ancestors and people and the environment such as bush tucker, flora and fauna, the seasonal change, the elements of earth, wind and fire, plus so much more.
Amy McQuire, Journalist and Author, talking about her new book “Black Witness”. Black Witness showcases how journalism can be used to hold the powerful to account and make the world a more equitable place. This is the essential collection that we need right now – and always have. Over the past two decades, she has reported on most of the key events involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including numerous deaths in custody, the Palm Island uprising, the Bowraville murders and the Northern Territory Intervention. She has also exposed the misrepresentations and violence of the mainstream media’s reports, as well as their omissions and silences altogether in regards to Indigenous matters.
