National Talk Black 080824
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Dr. Roshan Abraham, Indigenous Dentist, talking about the red flags of poor gum health due to cost-of-living. New data from the Australian Dental Association reveals three in five (61%) Australians have delayed oral health treatment in the last 12 months. In fact, the rising cost-of-living continues to present challenges by impacting Aussies’ health, with two-thirds (63%) delaying treatment due to affordability. What the data also found is this is particularly the case for seniors, vulnerable populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, those on low wages and people living with a disability. This Dental Health Week (5-11th August), the Australian Dental Association is urging people to prioritise their gum health by booking in with their dentist and checking their gum disease factsheet. Uncle Charlie King OAM, First Nations elder, talking about coming together to urge community to have a yarn about the abuse of older people. With 1 in 6 people aged 65 years and older across Australia experiencing some form of abuse, the new campaign by the Australian Government, spearheaded by the Attorney-General’s Department, aims to increase awareness across the Australian community about the abuse of older people. This includes highlighting the help and services available, and the importance of working together as a community to help support our older people. An animated video to help First Nations people recognise the different types of abuse of older people, and to know where to go to seek support, has also been developed. These videos, and further information, can be found at the link below!
