NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 09/08/2024
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Georgia Fowler, Occupational Therapist at Spinal Life Australia, talking about The revolutionary therapy supporting stroke survivors in Cairns, in honour of National Stroke Week (5-11 August). Spinal Life Australia have been making revolutionary strides in supporting individuals post-stroke. Their Healthy Living Centre located in Cairns offers upper limb therapy groups, exercise physiology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, as well as a fully accessible gym with equipment tailored to individuals needs and rehabilitation goals. These services give stroke survivors a chance to regain independence and improve their quality of life.
Kiran Adhikari, Volunteers at Vinnies, STAR Community Services, and The ORCA Project, talking about the compelling need to grow the spirit of volunteering in younger generations to meet volunteering demand. With volunteering rates among 18-24-year-olds in Australia sitting around 25%, compared to a third (33%) of older Australians (65-74-years old) who volunteer. The decline in student volunteerism comes at a critical time when their contributions are vital for the future of our communities. Young volunteers bring fresh perspectives and energy, addressing immediate needs for fostering community resilience and their involvement is crucial for building a stronger, more connected society.
