NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 5/12/2024
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Bronwen Clark, CEO of National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA), talking about the Alarming new data revealing government infrastructure investment not keeping up with population growth in QLD. Today, one in five Australians currently living in outer metro areas face inadequate access to schools, healthcare, third spaces, and other basic infrastructure. This issue is set to affect communities for generations, as new suburbs and population rises will see these areas house seven million people by 2031. New research by the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) has found concerning infrastructure gaps across all capitals, with outer-metropolitan suburbs, known as Growth Areas, having significantly lower rates of access to healthcare (48%) and education (21%), as well as arts & culture (44%) and sports & leisure facilities (68%). Alarming, in Queensland the biggest deficits include a 53% gap in access to health care, a 68% gap in sports and leisure facilities and a 34.5% gap in access to arts and culture centres.
Connie Rovina, First Nation Artist, talking about the “Summer Show”. UMI Arts will complete its 2024 exhibition season with the launch of The Summer Show – a collectible, gift-worthy visual art and jewellery collection by 12 of the far north’s emerging and established First Nations artists, Featuring 41 artworks in various mediums, including a line of polymer bead jewellery. The artists who created this vibrant show of works were asked to draw inspiration from the far northern summer and dynamic, electrical energy of the tropics. Each piece expresses inspiration through various materials and mediums and has a unique story or provenance. The artwork’s lines, forms, textures, and structures tell stories about the artist, their existence and how they experience a typical tropical summer. The Summer Show is open from Monday to Friday from 22 November 2024 to 20 February 2025 between 10 am and 4 pm at UMI Arts Shop 4, Jensen Plaza Gallery, 1 Jensen Street, Manoora. Jonas Luetke, Quadriplegic and Disability Advocate, calls for urgent social inclusion improvement. Sadly, among people with disability aged 15 and over, nearly one third (32%) are not satisfied with their community and have feelings of not belonging, with people with disability being twice as likely (19%) to experience social isolation. Jonas, a Cairns resident living with quadriplegia after a skydiving accident, is determined to change this narrative. With inspiration from his time at Spinal Life Australia’s Healthy Living Centre, a fully accessible hub for people living with disability, this experience which highlighted a sense of community has inspired a new vision. Jonas is now determined to bring the same sense of community to others through his plans to establish an inclusive hub at Cairns Pier.
