NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 06/12/2024
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Dr. Jayson Ibañez, Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) Director of Operations, talking about the First Nations wisdom playing key role in saving critically endangered Philippine eagle. Pushed to the brink of extinction by deforestation and illegal hunting, the eagle is one of the rarest birds in the world, with less than 400 pairs remaining in the wild. A group of Philippine rangers and Indigenous leaders have been in Gove this week taking part in extensive field work and learning on Country with Yolŋu rangers from the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation (DAC). Aimed at diversifying approaches to caring for ancestral lands in the Philippines and identifying culture and nature-based enterprise opportunities, the learnings are informing efforts to restore the native habitat of the Philippine eagle and include fire management and wildlife monitoring. The group of Philippine rangers and Indigenous leaders are in Australia for a month as part of an Australia Awards Fellowship and are being hosted by CDU’s RIEL. Kelly McCarthy, CDU TAFE Deputy CEO Central Australia, talking about Empowering remote communities through skills training. Skill shortages in remote areas means that something as simple as repairing a leaky tap can cost thousands of dollars. A new program from Charles Darwin University, is offering people training in some of the skills that would otherwise require a contractor, who might have to travel hundreds of kilometres to provide services costing thousands of dollars. The Northern Territory Government provided Charles Darwin University (CDU) funds to deliver in-community training to expand On Country skills at seven remote Community Hubs that service more than 20 remote communities. The training is fit for purpose based on the needs of each remote community, focusing on essential skills needed for current community-based projects and filling gaps across several industries including Community Services, Construction and Civil Construction. The funding enabled each cohort of students to have access to a language and literacy tutor as an additional support for students in each community as English is often their second or third language. Since the funding was received CDU TAFE staff members have travelled to community hubs across the Central Desert including Yuendumu, Ntaria, Multijulu and more and have provided accredited and non-accredited skills training. Skills taught range from mechanical maintenance, operating small plant and equipment, conducting earthworks and provide care for an aging population. To find out more, check out the link below!
