NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 29/11/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Nooky, a proud Yuin and Thunghutti rapper, producer and founder of the ‘We Are Warriors’ program for youth, is encouraging all First Nations people to ‘Turn Up Respect’ and silence the disrespectful influence of powerful, new social media influencers that are targeting young people and fuelling disrespect towards women and girls. ‘Turn Up Respect’ forms part of the latest phase of the Australian Government’s ‘Stop it at the Start’ campaign, which aims to prevent gender-based violence by encouraging adults to reflect on their attitudes and have conversations about respect with young people aged 10-17 years. This phase raises awareness of the new and negative influences that are impacting the way young people think about respect. Nooky burst onto the Sydney hip hop scene in 2010 and is now a vital voice in the Australian music landscape, known for his no-holds-barred, hyperactive brand of rap. Andrew Thorpe, Gunnai and Gunditjmara man and Great World Race Competitor, talking about his involvement in the Great World Race – 7 races, 7 continents to raise money for mob’s mental health. Sadly, it is known that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are more likely to die by suicide than other groups of people in Australia. Andrew knows this statistic all too well, and wants this to change. The impact can be devastating, not only for those living with mental illness, but for those around them. Andrew has just finished competing in the Great World Race, where runners travel to each of the seven continents to run a marathon in just seven days. Mr Thorpe wanted to compete to raise awareness for mental health and money for the Black Dog Institute, starting his journey off in Antarctica and finished it in America. Mr Thorpe made history, becoming the first Aboriginal man to compete. Congratulations, Andrew! To find out more, check out the link below.
