This year the Ecosystem Services Partnership (ESP) is holding its 11th global conference in Darwin and will be the first time the major event has been held in Australia since its inception in 2008. The conference will focus on nature-based solutions (NbS), or actions and methods that use and protect ecosystems while addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, human well-being, food and water insecurity and more. The conference will have a special focus on the insights of local and Indigenous people and what their value systems can offer. John Paul Janke, National Indigenous Affairs Editor at NITV and host of The Point, talking about NITV’s flagship Indigenous current affairs program The Point filmed in Gimuy (Cairns). The Point filmed an episode in community in Cairns with leaders from across Cairns and the Cape, in the key seat of Leichhardt. Ahead of the Federal Election, the episode asks panellists whether it’s enough to focus on the bare minimum in “closing the gap” or whether Australians should have higher expectations. Discussing topics that are important to local people, the panel will talk about the current state of affairs ahead of the voting day. Special guests include lawyer and former chair of Queensland’s Indigenous truth-telling and healing inquiry Josh Creamer, Former Young Australian of the Year, consultant and artist Tania Major and youth advocate and chairperson of DIYDG (Deadly Inspiring Youth Doing Good) Stacee Ketchell. The resulting episode premieres on SBS and NITV Tuesday 29 April at 7.30pm.
