National Talk Black 280324

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Jane Vadiveloo, CEO of the Indigenous organisation Children’s Ground, talking about how teaching Indigenous children their traditional language could be the key to greater education outcomes. The latest Closing the Gap report showed Indigenous educational outcomes were not on track to reach the targeted goals by 2031. Indigenous children could have much greater educational outcomes if Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups are more closely involved.

Chelsea Aniba, Community Leader in the Torres Strait, talking about how climate-hit communities are vital to help Australia prepare for future disasters. People whose communities have been hit by floods, fires, heat, and sea level rise met for the first time in Canberra in a new alliance calling for the government to put climate-impacted communities at the heart of decision making that impacts them. Chelsea is studying a Bachelor of Laws in Native Title at Charles Darwin University. And at the Climate Case On-Country hearings held in the Torres Strait in June, Chelsea joined the legal team on the bench, sitting alongside Senior Counsel Fiona McLeod AO SC.

Nathan Barker, Head of Community Investment for Commonwealth Bank, talking about how Can4Cancer are pedaling towards $20 millions to raise funds for Cancer research. Over the past decade CommBank’s Can4Cancer has raised close to $17 million for Tour de Cure, funding 145 cancer projects which have achieved 32 cancer breakthroughs. They’ve now set an ambitious target to reach a total of $20 million raised for cancer research by the end of 2024.
