Malcolm Mann, Darumbal Traditional Owner and on the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (GBRF) Traditional Owner Advisory Group, talking about how the World’s largest Traditional Owner-led Reef protection initiative is transforming conservation. Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owners are sharing their world-leading approach to weaving Traditional Knowledge with Western science, in a bid to help protect coral reefs in the wake of the fourth global mass coral bleaching event. For over 30 years, Traditional Owners have called for greater involvement in the formal governance and management of their land and sea Country. Today, more than 6,000 Indigenous custodians of the Great Barrier Reef are engaged in the largest-ever investment in Traditional Owner-led reef protection. Project highlights include: Traditional Owner led restoration of critical wetlands near Ingham has seen key species of birds returning to Country. Goondoi (meaning cassowary) Rangers applied Western scientific methods combined with Traditional Knowledge to install two sediment ponds on their Country to filter the water before it reached their wetlands to restore a deep ecological imbalance that was seeing the decline of cassowary numbers. Girringun Rangers have developed new approaches to monitoring seagrass and dugong health using an Indigenous led framework creating a new positive way of working with researchers. Seagrass mapping and monitoring is contributing to the assessment of the health and composition of seagrass communities, and trends over time. These projects are part of the largest co-designed Traditional Owner-led reef protection program in the world. They have improved the health of the Great Barrier Reef and its communities by enabling over 6,000 Traditional Owners to design and run projects on their land and sea Countries that address local ecosystem threats such as poor water quality and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks.
