On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Jacob Briggs, Played for the United Warriors, talking about the 2024 Gordonvale Indigenous Rugby League Carnival (GIRLFC). Hosted every year at Alley Park in Gordonvale, just outside the Cairns region, GIRLFC has been a successful football carnival for the past 11 years! Jacob was able to find out about GIRLFC, through Bumma Bippera, as well. And has played at other football comps such as, the 2023 Island of Origin at Badu Island for the Goemu Bau Raiders and at the Koori Knockouts this year.
Kevin Bloomfield, Kmart Group’s First Nations Programs Manager, talking about Target Australia unveiling new bespoke design for its Deadly Stores across Australia. The design, titled ‘Family Tides of Unity’, is a visual representation of Target’s journey towards creating safe and welcoming spaces for everyone in the community. It was proudly created for Target by several young Indigenous designers from Indigenous Design Labs based in Cairns, with support from First Nations design and creative agency ingeous studios. Launched at the Target Cairns City store in Far North Queensland, Target Cairns will act as the pilot store for showcasing the artwork among Target’s Deadly Store Network of 36 stores. Grace Skehan, Charles Darwin University (CDU) Lecturer Indigenous Knowledges and Education, talking about the First Nations Introduction to University program supporting regional cohorts for the first time. The course covers academic skills, knowledge and confidence to study at university for teacher education students as well as students interested in studying in health, arts, business and STEM. The program had its first cohort complete the four-week program in Alice Springs earlier this year and will potentially be expanded to CDU’s Nhulunbuy campus in 2025.
