National Talk Black 250324
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Caitlin Wilson, Shine Lawyers Special Counsel, talking about Shine Lawyers filing a Complaint in the Australian Human Rights Commission against the Department of Communities in Western Australia, alleging the Department has been removing First Nations children from their families discriminatorily, in what is being dubbed a second wave of the Stolen Generation. It is the second Complaint filed by the firm against a Department of Child Protection.
Regan Smith, Gia’s Mum, talking about her daughter Gia’s care and treatment at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Seven-year-old Gia Smith, diagnosed at just two years old, is uniting Far North Queensland, championing support for the Children’s Hospital Foundation Easter Appeal and the region’s sickest and most critically injured kids.
April Lawrie, South Australia’s Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, talking about First Nations mothers’ trauma of baby removals heard in inquiry and the call to change process. SA’s Department for Child Protection (DCP) never notified support workers or expectant mothers of its intentions to remove newborn babies at birth. Ms Lawrie described the way in which authorities serve child removal notifications to new mothers as “appalling” and “disgraceful”. SA’s Department for Child Protection deputy chief has apologised to families during an inquiry into the removal of First Nations children.
Susi Tegan, National Rural Health Alliance Chief Executive, talking about Healthcare equity is one step to Close the Gap for rural First Nations people. The National Rural Health Alliance (the Alliance) calls on governments and health entities to commit to the recommendations of the Close the Gap Campaign Report 2024 to ensure that we, as a nation, realise true health equity for Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
