National Talk Black 220424
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Gary Lang, Artistic Director of Gary Lang Northern Territory Dance Company and chorerographer of “The Other Side of Me” presented by BlakDance, talking about about his dance work “The Other Side of Me”. Gary’s work shares a poignant new angle on Stolen Generations – one young man adopted and raised in a small UK village. Stranded between two families, two countries and two cultures, this delicate duet explores colonisation’s grey areas, its wide-ranging destructive impact for all involved. It offers its audience the opportunity to experience the singing of a young man’s spirit home. Gary speaks about the process of creating this show, including meeting the young man’s adoptive family. Happening from the 30th of April – 2nd of May 2024 at The State Theatre Centre of WA, Heath Ledger Theatre, you check out more information and tickets on the link below!
Paul Ah Chee, Parrtjima’s Director of Cultural Engagement, talking about Parrtjima – A Festival in Light in Alice Springs. The annual free 10-day festival, featured light installations, artworks, performances, music, and talks, attracted more than 3000 attendances, the second highest opening night since Parrtjima began in 2016. Across the weekend the festival attracted over 8000 attendances.
Gary Strachan, Director behind the Deadly Hair Dude and the 2024 COSBOA National Small Business Champion, talking about his over 30 years’ experience in business and financial management; and how his not-for-profit arm of the Deadly Hair Dude, sees young Indigenous people learning the art of hair and receiving a Certificate II in Hairdressing. The intention of the program is to build self-esteem, develop opportunities, skills and a capable workforce for remote Indigenous communities and thus Gary has created local employment, as well as addressing broader social issues and sustainable enterprise development. You can check out more of the Deadly Hair Dude in the link below. Congratulations, Gary and keep up the inspiring work!
