National Talk Black 190424

On todays National Talkback via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Dr. Charlotte Hespe, Head of General Practice at University of Notre Dame, School of Medicine Sydney, talking about how experts have made the call for Aussies to stay on guard for life-threatening meningococcal disease. With up to one in ten (10%) of individuals carrying the bacteria without showing symptoms, experts are expecting to see a rise in cases this chilly season, following from last year’s 18% increase in cases compared to 2022. Aussies are being reminded to practice good hygiene to help prevent the spread of germs and equip themselves with potentially life-saving information to spot the early signs and symptoms of the disease. Paul Ah Chee- Parrtjima, Director of Cultural Engagement, talking about Parrtjima – A Festival in Light in Alice Springs. Opening night of the annual free 10-day festival, which features light installations, artworks, performances, music, and talks, attracted more than 3000 attendances, the second highest opening night since Parrtjima began in 2016. Across the weekend the festival attracted over 8000 attendances. Parrtjima 2024 will run until 21 April.

Uncle Kenneth McLean, Dingaal clan member and Walmbaar Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson, talking about the discovery of Australia’s oldest pottery rewrites understanding of Aboriginal maritime history. Traditional Owners and researchers report on the oldest securely dated pottery discovered in Australia, located at Jiigurru (Lizard Island Group) on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Australia. This significant finding challenges previous notions that Aboriginal Australian communities were unaware of pottery manufacture before European settlement, instead suggesting a rich history of long-distance cultural exchanges and technological innovation long before British arrival.
