NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 20/03/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Nathan Lovett-Murray, Event Organiser and Founder of the Indigenous Sports Network (ISN), talking about the Ngarra Jarra Noun – Healing Ceremony, to be held at Victoria Park on Sunday, 13th of April 2025. The third iteration of this powerful event promotes community healing and wellbeing through ceremony and culture: in partnership with the Dhadjowa Foundation, the 2025 event will pay tribute to families and communities affected by Aboriginal deaths in custody. Featuring a powerhouse headlining performance from renowned Indigenous rapper Briggs, and supported by talented local acts including Crooked TP, MPath Soul, Jayden Lillyst and Aaron Morgan, Ngarra Jarra Noun will also feature healing ceremonies conducted by Jason Tamiru with ten local traditional dance groups. The Ngarra Jarra Noun – Healing Ceremony promises to be an impactful experience and emphasises the Indigenous Sports Network’s continuing dedication to cultural celebration. Everyone is welcome to join in for a day of cultural celebration, resilience and healing, free for the entire community.

Tom Espinoza, Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management (BMRG) CEO, talking about the turn to the Common Sprinkler to Save endangered Queensland Bum Breathing Turtle. Scientists and Traditional Owners have outwitted Mother Nature – with the common garden sprinklers. Seeking to mitigate the effects of climate change on turtles breeding cycles, researchers from the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) have partnered with Taribelang Aboriginal Corporation (TAC), WYLD Projects Indigenous Corporation, and the Kabi Kabi People’s Aboriginal Corporation (KKPAC). With Australian government support, they designed an irrigation system to replicate the perfect rainstorm – to trick critically endangered, bum-breathing turtles into laying their eggs outside the species’ usual rainy breeding season. For 90 minutes, two sprinklers worked in tandem—one dousing the sandy riverbank, the other misting the water’s surface with a precise 11ml of water, mimicking the drumming rhythm of a rain shower. It worked! The freshwater Mary River turtle (Elusor macrurus) and the white-throated snapping turtle (Elseya albagula), or Milbi to Traditional Owners, are highly endemic, iconic, and totemic species. They face myriad natural and man-made threats, and both are listed as critically endangered (CE) under the EPBC Act 1999. The trials have commenced in the lower Burnett River, all with the same goal: to integrate cultural knowledge and management into modern conservation efforts.

Sharon Vella, Master Builders Queensland FNQ Regional Manager, talking about the Queensland housing approvals: positive policy steps, but numbers fall short. Headway is being made on policy to boost housing supply in Queensland – but the latest regional building approvals numbers confirm there is still much work to be done. The figures from Australian Bureau of Statistics reveal all regions except the Gold Coast enjoyed a boost in the number of approvals of new houses and units in the 12 months to January, rising by 6.3 per cent across Queensland. The cost to build also stabilised, which helped to release some of the pent-up demand for detached houses, with approvals across the state increasing by 12.7 per cent over the year. Unfortunately, this was not the case for units, where approvals continued to struggle, down -6.9 per cent. However, the three-month breakdown from November to January disappointingly confirms a return to a downward trend. Greater Brisbane (-14.9 per cent) and Wide Bay Burnett (-11.5 per cent) clocked double-figure negatives, along with Gold Coast (-8.3 per cent), North Queensland (-7.5), and Far North Queensland (-6.4 per cent), Mackay & Whitsunday (-2.8 per cent) and Downs & Western (-2.4 per cent). Central Queensland was the only exception, with a +3.9 per cent hike.
