NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 19/03/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Wayne ‘Coco’ Wharton, Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) Candidate, talking about his official campaign launch for the Queensland Senate as a candidate for the Indigenous Aboriginal Party of Australia (IAPA) in the upcoming Federal Election. As a prominent Indigenous activist, Wharton has been a vocal proponent of land rights, cultural preservation, and reparations for the enduring impacts of colonisation, including the Stolen Generations and dispossession of traditional lands. Wayne is stepping forward to represent the voices of First Nations people in the fight for justice, self-determination, and truth. A key aspect of his vision is how restitution can directly empower Indigenous communities, closing the gap by providing resources and opportunities that address systemic disadvantages. Wayne is working to establish embassies in Harlem and Dublin, taking the fight for justice to the international stage. He is building networks of resistance and solidarity across the country, demanding the truth: Australia has never made a citizenship agreement with Indigenous people, and it is time for the government to admit it. He is urging all YES voters from the Voice referendum to place the IAPA’s number one above the line, a move he believes will help elevate the political representation of Indigenous peoples. Luke Twyford, Queensland Family & Child Commission (QFCC) Principal Commissioner, talking about the Grants up for grabs for child safe organisations. Queensland last year passed the Child Safe Organisations Act 2024. Queensland organisations that work with children, provide services to them, or operate facilities for their use will soon need to comply with this legislation to be considered child safe. This includes implementing Child Safe Standards and the Universal Principle (which ensures cultural safety). The new legislation applies to more than 40,000 organisations across Queensland. It will come into effect from October 2025, meaning organisations need to be preparing now. To help organisations build their capability and capacity to meet the new requirements, QFCC have launched a Child Safeguarding Grants Program. It offers eligible organisations grants of up to $90,000 to help them become child safe, including a category especially for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations. These changes represent the biggest improvement to child safeguarding in Queensland’s history and will help our state build a culture of safety and wellbeing for all children.
