NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 17/01/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Matthew Ryan, Northern Land Council (NLC) Chairman, talking about the Governments promise to rehabilitate one of NT’s most toxic abandoned mines. The former Redbank copper mine has been leaking battery-strength acid into waterways from the Gulf of Carpentaria near Robinson River to the Queensland border 40 kilometres away since it ceased operations after two years of mining in 1996. Traditional owners have been calling for the site to be rehabilitated ever since but their pleas have been ignored by successive governments. The NT government had not required the miner to put down an environmental security bond to fund rehabilitation before it collapsed. Northern Land Council chairman Matthew Ryan said he met with new government ministers following the August election to warn them many Indigenous traditional owners planned to veto any new mines on their land unless there was a firm commitment to deal with pollution from Redbank and other legacy mines. The NLC is an independent statutory authority of the commonwealth. It is responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas.
