NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 15/01/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Teho Ropeyarn, Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) Acting Artistic Director, talking about The Cairns Indigenous Arts Fairs return to one-stop-festival hub, Tanks Arts Centre. Announcing the move ahead of CIAF’s 16th annual season, scheduled for July, CIAF CEO Dennis Stokes highlighted Tanks Arts Centre’s compelling combination of history, heritage, and state-of-the-art capability housed within its three multi-purpose tanks and rainforest setting. According to Mr Stokes, the city’s much-loved arts and cultural precinct will be transformed into an immersive and integrative First Nations celebration welcoming festivalgoers to drop in, wander at leisure or stay awhile. In line with tradition, the 2025 programming begins on Thursday, 10 July, with an opening event, a ticketed event, albeit in the new surroundings of Tanks Arts Centre. CIAF’s Acting Artistic Director, Teho Ropeyarn, said this year’s theme, Pay Attention!, is a call to action for artists who promise to create an evocative and contemporary thread connecting visual and performing arts, educational talks, site activations, cultural entertainment and activities. As tradition dictates, the opening event will offer guests a first look at the Art Fair exhibition in a lively, social, and dramatically lit indoor/outdoor rainforest setting. The official programming will commence on Friday, 11 July, with the opening of the Art Fair and close on Sunday, 13 July.

Adam Desmond, Founder & Executive Director, Binar Futures Ltd, talking about how The Binar Futures basketball team is lighting a spark in a generation of young Indigenous kids. On the surface, Binar Futures is a basketball club. It runs its own league, holds school clinics and runs training sessions four nights a week. But the organisation is so much more. It takes the interest many Aboriginal kids have in basketball and uses that to create better health, cultural and education outcomes. Adam likens using basketball as a gateway to other important programs — such as homework or cultural sessions — to pairing boring vegetables with a delicious food kids like. Binar, which is the Noongar word for meteor, is almost unrecognisable from the one-man-band it started out as.

Jack Wilkie-Jans, Tradtional Owner from Mapoon (Western Cape) and Aborignal Affairs advocate, talking about the Cape York World Heritage Listing process. The review, announced by Queensland Environment Minister Andrew Powell on 2 January, follows a controversial nomination submitted to UNESCO by the Commonwealth government and former Miles state government in 2024. Mr Wilkie-Jans called on Minister Powell to involve Traditional Owners and other landholders in co-designing the review’s Terms of Reference, particularly to examine the consultation process and funding led by the Cape York Land Council. He emphasised the need for community involvement. Mr Wilkie-Jans outlined key concerns, noting the Cape is already protected through existing tenures including Cultural Heritage, National Park/State Forest, Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land conservation and Native Title. He also highlighted the risks of WHL being applied broadly. He urged Cape York Peninsula communities to participate in the review process, emphasising the importance of their voices in determining the region’s future.
