NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 11/12/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Cassandra Kirkland, ArcMate Co-Founder and Sales Manager, talking about how Seven in ten Australian’s don’t know bushfire rules as high-risk summer looms. While the summer heat understandably inspires Australians to head out and enjoy the great outdoors, the dry conditions increase the risk of bushfires. With around one in ten bushfires caused by campfire negligence, it’s essential that campers understand and follow their local fire regulations. Yet new research from camping enthusiasts ArcMate reveals a worrying knowledge gap, with almost three-quarters (72%) of men admitting they do not confidently know their bushfire safety requirements – a number that climbs even higher among women (79%). The risk of fire is also changing behaviour, with one in ten (11%) Australians having cancelled or altered camping plans due to fire danger, and another tenth (11%) avoiding campfires altogether. A further one-third (34%) report that finding safe and legal spots to build a fire is their biggest challenge when setting up a traditional campfire. You can find out more via the link below!

Professor Leonard Harrison, WEHI – Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research Study Lead, talking about Gut health of Indigenous infants offers potential blueprint to help close the gap. Despite facing some of the highest rates of chronic disease later in life, a new study has found remote First Nations Australians are born with a natural health advantage: a rich and diverse gut microbiome. The natural health advantage was uncovered through a study conducted by WEHI in collaboration with The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) and Elders in the Northern Territory, that compared the gut bacteria of Indigenous and non-Indigenous infants. The findings provide a crucial blueprint for future studies to better understand how to prevent westernisation from eroding this strong marker of early-life health, and why First Nations Australians are over-represented in chronic diseases despite this healthy start. Jackie Coates, Telstra Foundation CEO, talking about One festive call to Santa this weekend helps make a child’s Christmas bright! As children countdown to Santa’s arrival, not all will share in the joy, some face family pressures and social isolation. Telstra’s Free Calls to Santa initiative lets kids have fun, learn to use a payphone in an emergency, and support others. This weekend (13–14 December), Telstra will donate $1 to Kids Helpline for every call, funding counsellors who help young people through stress, loneliness, and holiday pressures. Kids big and small can call Santa for free from any Telstra payphone by dialling #HOHOHO (#46 46 46). Every call this weekend* spreads festive cheer and helps Kids Helpline continue providing vital, round-the-clock support to young Australians. You can find out more via the link below!
