Tracy McRae and Professor Asha Bowen, Researcher and SToP Trial lead, talking about the landmark WA skin health study halving skin infection rates in Aboriginal kids in the Kimberley. The SToP Trial (See, Treat and Prevent skin infections) was undertaken in close collaboration with a number of Aboriginal communities in the East and West Kimberley, and with organisations including Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services, Nirrumbuk Environmental Health and Services, and WACHS-Kimberley. There were 915 children involved in the study. Results to be published in two journals on Wednesday (The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health and eClinical Medicine) reveal infection rates have been cut from almost 40 per cent at the start of the study to 20 per cent. Community empowerment was a key feature of the study and its success. Regular skin check-ups, conducted in collaboration with schools, local communities and local health organisations, were identified as the single biggest factor behind the successful reduction in infection rates. Another great outcome has been the production of a heap of co-designed information resources including healthy skin story books featuring language, photos and artwork created by students, and a hip-hop video filmed on the Dampier Peninsula that shared healthy skin messages in the children’s own words.

Jason East, Cairns non-complete C4 Quadriplegic, talking about the battle to get questions answered after having his needs neglected. As seen in the Cairns Post, Jason has had to deal with a number of problems, with housing, that have left him feeling helpless and unsupported. Although Jason managed to get emergency accommodation, 5 weeks after first reporting the leak, his unit became an electrical safety hazard (he got zapped on two different occasions), he still wants answers.
