National Talk Black 050624
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
John Leha, AbSec CEO, talking about transitioning to Aboriginal community-controlled care. Transition involves shifting the support of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care from non-Indigenous organisations to Aboriginal community-controlled organisations. Carers of Aboriginal children and the service staff who support them came together in Penrith to discuss the ongoing transition project. It is partly about self-determination but mostly motivated by a desire to see Aboriginal children and young people supported by those who understand their culture needs and ensuring their connection to community.
Alastair King, The Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation (ALPA) CEO, talking about ALPA’s continuous support to supplying food and more to remote communities. Indigenous owned and operated, ALPA, has been delivering food to our remotest locations for more than 50 years. It is one of the country’s largest employers of First Nations people, and invests back into the community through construction projects, and youth and social support programs. Founded on the principles of empowerment, sustainability, and social justice, ALPA strives to make a lasting difference in the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
William Palmer, First Nations Tour Guide, talking about his job as a First Nations Tour Guide. Growing up On Country provided Will with continuous learning. His grandmother, guided him and passed on local knowledge including the Arrernte language, cultural significant stories and knowledge of Country. The tourism industry in the Northern Territory is worth almost $800 million and brings visitors from all over the world, many of whom love to learn more about First Nations history, language and culture. This is where Will sees himself thriving as he feels the position suits both his passions and knowledge.
