NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 24/10/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Squadron Leader Daniel Botros, Royal Australian Air Force and Psychologist, talking about Air Force supports Indigenous Health in Far North Queensland. The Royal Australian Air Force is visiting Mareeba, Queensland, from 1 October to 6 November for Exercise Kummundoo 2025. The initiative will deliver essential health services and deepening ties with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities across Far North Queensland. Now in its 11th year, Exercise Kummundoo is a community engagement initiative delivered in partnership with the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO). The program supports Air Force’s reconciliation commitments while contributing to better health outcomes in regional and remote Indigenous communities. Air Force health specialists and Indigenous Engagement Officers will work alongside the Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Primary Health Care Services Clinic in Mareeba to deliver dental care, environmental health services, physical wellbeing support and mental health promotion. Outreach services will also extend to Atherton and Kuranda, reaching communities across a 72-kilometre area. In additional to health services, the Defence Science and Technology Group will deliver STEM activities and Air Force will speak with local youth to promote inclusive and supportive Defence career pathways for Indigenous Australians. Exercise Kummundoo supports the Australian Government’s closing the gap strategy and reflects Air Force’s commitment to working in partnership with Traditional Custodians to build trust, capability, and lasting connections. Sharman Williams, 2025 Indiegnous Marathon Project (IMP) Squad Member, talking about The Indigenous Marathon Foundation take on the TCS New York City Marathon. The 2025 IMP Squad will train for the biggest marathon in the world in November — the TCS New York City Marathon — showing the power of choosing to do hard things. Squad members will meet at set times throughout the year to participate in a week-long workshop, kicking off in Canberra this May. The Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) is a six-month health, wellbeing, and leadership journey. The project uses running to change lives and provide a renewed sense of empowerment, purpose, and pride. This year, they received a RECORD 323 applications to join the 2025 IMP Squad. Following a national tryout tour and lots of careful consideration from Jack Stevens, IMP Head Coach, we’re incredibly proud to announce the 12 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people who have been selected. Throughout the six-month health, wellbeing, and leadership journey, IMP Squad members will be supported Jack and former world marathon champion Robert de Castella AO MBE, founder and director of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation. Sharman started working at AFL Cape York House for Girls, working with Indigenous girls across the Cape and Queensland, supporting them the way ‘little Sharman’ needed. Some of the girls in the Cairns Deadly Runners and Walkers community inspired her to apply: “They can’t be, what they can’t see”. She wants to be that role model. Congratulations, Sharman and Good Luck Team! You can find out more via the link below!
