NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 27/08/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Toni Janke, BIGSOUND Goolwal Goolwal Advisory Group Chair and Musician, talking about BIGSOUND’s 2025 Goolwal Goolwal Program. Translated from the traditional Yuggera language, “Goolwal Goolwal” means “Big Sound” – as such, this deadly program of events and cultural experiences has become an integral part of BIGSOUND’s programming in recent years. Nestled within the busy district of Fortitude Valley, Magandjin (Brisbane), Goolwal Goolwal invites all attendees to immerse themselves in this dynamic series of panels, performances, workshops and more; discovering the wealth of talent thriving within First Nations communities nationwide. With a program boasting free events to attend within the dedicated Goolwal Garden, as well as a slew of free performances on the Brunswick Street Mall Stage, Goolwal Goolwal is a key calendar component of BIGSOUND 2025. The program features special events that will see the likes of BARKAA, BRIGGS and Kobie Dee take the stage for various panels and conversations, as well as performances by up and coming artists including FLEWNT, INKABEE, Downsyde, Taija, JJ Vacant, TEHIIRI and more! Diana Jans, Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth 2025 Karrikin Award Recipient, talking about her Karrikin Award. The Karrikin Award recognises Indigenous leaders who stimulate ideas and growth through their dedication and outstanding contribution to reducing stillbirth rates among Indigenous communities. The word ‘karrikin’ is derived from ‘karrik’ — a Western Australian Nyoongar word for ‘smoke’. Karrikins in plants stimulate seed germination and growth after bushfire. Diana is a member of the Stillbirth CRE’s Indigenous Advisory Group and has shown unwavering commitment to improving outcomes for First Nations families through culturally safe and community-led approaches to research and care. Congratulations, Diana! You can find out more via the link below! (Photo Credits: Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth)
