Mikaela French, Solicitor at Marrawah Law discussing the Meriba Omasker Kaziw Kazipa (Torres Strait Islander Child Rearing Practice) Act 2020 was passed by Queensland Parliament last week. The Act is historic for Torres Strait Islander people as it means that traditional adoption and child-rearing practices which have been practiced for many generations is now recognised by the Australian legal system.

Karen Foat, Assistant Commissioner at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) talking about tax time support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The ATO continues to see increased demand for the dedicated and tailored support provided each year to make tax and super as easy as possible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Carly Jia, Senior Advisor, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education at the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership talking about the new discussion paper ‘Indigenous cultural competency in the Australian teaching workforce’. This paper aims to facilitate a rem-imagining of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures, identities and histories are reflected and understood in Australian classrooms.
