National Talkblack 061219
On todays National Talkblack via NIRS – NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we had:
Marrawah Law ????Victoria is Australia’s first state to introduce a bill to achieve gender equality in the workplace and across the wider community.
The Gender Equality Bill aims to improve workplace gender equality across the Victorian public sector, universities and local councils. The Gender Equality Bill also aims to help bridge the 14.1% pay gap and increase opportunities for career progression.
Matt Thistlethwaite – The member for Kingsford Smith which includes La Perouse – the oldest continuous Indigenous settlement in Sydney and home to Gweagal descendants – is due to move the parliamentary motion. A motion calls on the federal government to intensify efforts to cooperate with other countries, especially Britain, for return of Aboriginal cultural materials – including ancestral human remains – in the name of “truth telling”.
Questions are being asked about why the Federal Government has defunded the peak body representing Indigenous survivors of domestic violence. The National Family Violence Prevention and Legal Services Forum represents 13 frontline organisations, but the Government won’t be renewing its funding. It means there will now be no national advocacy group giving a voice to Aboriginal domestic violence victims. Family violence campaigners and the Opposition is accusing the Government and the Minister for Indigenous Australians of attempting to silence peak Aboriginal organisations.
