Kenny Bedford, Reconciliation Australia Cairns-based Director, talking about this years National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June). National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Reconciliation Australia is the lead body for reconciliation in Australia. They inspire and build relationships, respect and trust between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. The 2024 NRW Theme is Now More Than Ever. Kenny yarns with Trendy Trev about what it means to him and his hopes for the future.
Marjorie Anderson, National Program Manager, talking about how 13YARN marking 50,000 calls supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in crisis. 13YARN is the first national crisis support line for mob who are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping. Since 13YARN was established in March 2022, the Indigenous-led national crisis support service has supported Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members across a milestone 50,000 calls. Marjorie says the service’s rapid growth has been responsive to the urgent need for culturally safe and confidential crisis support. In 2022, 16% of callers cited racism as the reason for their distress, rising to 19% in 2023. This statistic continues to rise, and currently sits at 26% in the calendar year to date. Carla Rogers, co-founder of Evolve Communities (National Telstra Best of Business – Building Communities 2024 winner), talking about National Reconciliation Week and Non-Indigenous Allyship and Sharing the Cultural Load. Evolve Communities builds understanding and collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Co-founded by Carla and Aunty Munya Andrews, Evolve aims to create a kinder, more inclusive society through education and engagement. The 2024 theme – Now More Than Ever – aligns with Evolve’s messages of community engagement and allyship, the role of non-Indigenous allies in reconciliation, the importance of sharing the cultural load, and facilitating a more inclusive and understanding Australia.
Professor Steve Larkin, Healing Foundation Chair, talking about May 26 National Sorry Day. The Healing Foundation is a national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that provides a platform to amplify the voices and lived experience of Stolen Generations survivors and their families. Professor Steve sheds light on past Sorry Days and National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) and what it all means to him.
