NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 27/11/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Richard Hoolihan, Gugu Badhun Traditional Owner and Chair of the NQ Dry Tropics Traditional Owner Management Group (TOMG) and Karen Vilder, Partnerships Co-ordinator, NQ Dry Tropics, talking about the Ancient Indigenous fire knowledge that can help farmers, unite communities and transform lives and the Graziers who are keen to learn from Traditional Owners. The project is a collaboration between natural resource management group NQ Dry Tropics, the Firesticks Alliance, the World Wide Fund for Nature-Australia, Gugu Badhun Traditional Owners, and graziers. After the 2019-20 bushfires, the NQ Dry Tropics Traditional Owner Management Group which provides the organisation with cultural guidance, was concerned the region was unhealthy because right-way fire was not being practised. Furthermore, the skills needed to bring back cultural burning needed to be recovered. To find out more, check out the link below!

Dr. Olivia O’Donoghue, National Clinical Head of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Training, RACGP, talking about the ‘First of its kind’ framework that will embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values in GP training. The “RACGP’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural and Health Training Framework” has been launched and had Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical education experts and leaders lead development of the framework, which sets out a plan to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values and ways of being and doing in GP training. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is the peak representative organisation for general practice, the backbone of Australia’s health system. Focussing on 12 guiding principles, the framework honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership and embeds Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values and culture into the RACGP’s GP Training and education program. Jonas Luetke, Quadriplegic and Disability Advocate, calls for urgent social inclusion improvement this Disability Action Week (24 Nov – 1 Dec). Sadly, among people with disability aged 15 and over, nearly one third (32%) are not satisfied with their community and have feelings of not belonging, with people with disability being twice as likely (19%) to experience social isolation. Jonas, a Cairns resident living with quadriplegia after a skydiving accident, is determined to change this narrative. With inspiration from his time at Spinal Life Australia’s Healthy Living Centre, a fully accessible hub for people living with disability, this experience which highlighted a sense of community has inspired a new vision. Jonas is now determined to bring the same sense of community to others through his plans to establish an inclusive hub at Cairns Pier.
