National Talk Black 240424

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

John Officer, Guide Dog Mobility Specialist at Guide Dogs Queensland, talking about Guide Dog Handlers consistently being refused access to taxis and rideshares, in honour of International Guide Dog Day today (24 April). For Australians living with low vision or blindness, a Guide Dog can be a lifeline, offering newfound freedom and independence. However, reports from the community sadly reveal that almost every second travel journey results in refusal from a taxi or rideshare. In fact, Guide Dogs have legal right to enter any event, business, public venue or rideshare service in Queensland and if they are being refused access, their handlers aren’t able to enjoy the freedom and independence that their dog is meant to provide. This International Guide Dog Day (24 April), Guide Dogs Queensland is raising awareness about all the places Aussies can go with their Guide Dogs. From buses and planes to theatres and restaurants – anywhere you can go, Guide Dogs can go too.

Professor Vicky Brown and Kat Henaway, Queensland Director of Pathways to Politics for Women and CEO of Politics in Colour, talking about pathways to politics for women. If you are a First Nations woman with a passion for political leadership, applications are open until 1 May 2024 for the transformational Pathways to Politics for Women program. Pathways to Politics for Women aims to increase the number of women in Australian politics by equipping diverse women to boldly embrace their political ambitions, thrive as leaders and make a profound contribution to society.

Chris Suey, Services Australia, talking about ABSTUDY for Indigenous children. It’s an important time for parents who are getting their children ready for high school next year. ABSTUDY is a payment available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are required to live away from the family home to study. Chris talks to parents about how to get through to the support that’s available, how they can find out if their eligible and how to apply.
