Stephen Harfield, The University of Queensland Poche Centre for Indigenous Health Senior Research Fellow, talking about ‘Mob want to see mob’: First Nations’ clinics a priority for many young Indigenous Australians. Cultural connection and positive healthcare experiences are of high value to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians when deciding to access healthcare. A UQ-led study examined factors supporting or hindering young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from accessing primary healthcare services, finding many participants preferred Aboriginal providers where they can ‘be themselves.’ The research is published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health. Ben Ballard, First Peoples Leading Chief Executive Officer, talking about New pathways to grow First Nations leadership. A major new investment in First Peoples Leading will expand opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders across Australia. The funding will strengthen culturally grounded leadership programs, making them more accessible and equipping more First Nations people with the skills, confidence, and connections to drive positive change in their communities and workplaces. Paul Ramsay Foundation (PRF) will support First Peoples Leading with a $780,000 grant over three years to enable scholarships for its First Nations designed and delivered leadership programs, supporting participants join a growing network of First Nations leaders creating positive change across sectors.
