NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 22/08/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Soozie Gillies, Tackling Indigenous Smoking Program Coordinator, talking about We Breathe: powerful TV campaign launches to tackle indigenous smoking. A public health campaign designed to challenge the tobacco and nicotine industry’s grip on communities, We Breathe, Tackling Indigenous Smoking, has launched to address a rise in vaping and smoking across the region – in towns and cities including Goulburn, Yass, Quenbeyan, Nowra, Eden and Cooma. The campaign is designed in-line with the global World No Tobacco Day theme, Unmasking the Appeal, which exposes the tobacco industry’s calculated use of bright packaging, appealing flavours, and youth-targeted marketing, all designed to hook a new generation while hiding the real harms. The We Breathe campaign confronts these tactics head-on, with a culturally grounded TVC filmed on country, designed to educate, empower and inspire Aboriginal communities to protect their mob and country from the harm of smoking and vaping. Tameera Guivarra, Community Pharmacist, talking about Towards 2035 & First Nations Australians and Community Pharmacy. Towards 2035 is the Pharmacy Guild’s strategic plan for the next decade. It is a bold and practical response to the lessons of the pandemic, the challenges of workforce shortages, and the increasing expectations of patients and policymakers. It outlines a clear vision: that our communities will think pharmacy first for healthcare. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia is actively advancing

First Nations engagement and inclusion through a range of internal and external initiatives. Internally, the Guild is fostering a culturally safe workplace by providing cultural awareness training that acknowledges Australia’s history and its continuing impact on First Nations peoples. Externally, the Guild is engaged in partnerships and advisory roles that support First Nations health and representation. You can find out more via the link below!

Senior Sergeant Glen De Lai, Edmonton Police – Whichway Yarning Segment, talking about Safe Drinking. No amount of alcohol can be considered completely safe. Even drinking small amounts increases your chance of getting cancer. By limiting the amount that you drink you can reduce your risk of harm from alcohol-related injury or disease.
