The Northern Territory Government’s decision to open its first so-called “dedicated” women’s prison facility next week is not a milestone to celebrate, it is an indictment of a government addicted to punishment and the mass incarceration of Aboriginal people. Ned David, Chair of Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council (GBK), talking about The 1936 Maritime Strike – 90 years on from this historic worker strike, the Torres Strait Islands are celebrating its impact. Subjected for years to racist and restrictive conditions by government officials, by January 1936 the workers could contain their righteous fury no longer, leading to their historic strike. The collective industrial action was the first by Indigenous maritime workers in Australia. Staged by GBK, celebrations ran in a week-long commemoration beginning in the Torres Strait, The events included seminars and cultural exhibitions. You can find out more via Gur A Baradharaw Kod . Paul Singer, Soldier On Australia CEO, talking about Australians urged to March On for veteran mental health. March On is a free, nationwide fundraising challenge that invites participants to walk, run or roll 96 kilometres, independently or with others, anywhere they choose. Participants can complete the challenge at their own pace, across the month of March, making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Funds raised through the March On Challenge support Soldier On’s health and wellbeing services to help prevent veteran suicide and save lives. You can find out more via the link below!
