NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 19/12/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Rodney Carter, DJAARA Group CEO, talking about DJAARA wins Telstra Business of the Year Award. DJAARA, together with their deadly enterprises, was announced Telstra’s Business of the Year – and also winner of the Indigenous Excellence category – at the Telstra Best of Business Awards. Telstra Best of Business Awards were created to celebrate the achievements of these small and medium-sized businesses, while giving them the opportunity to learn from Australia’s best business minds. Established in 2004 to uplift and empower Dja Dja Wurrung People, DJAARA has grown into a multi-million-dollar organisation that includes three enterprises: DJANDAK (natural resource management and design), DUMAWUL (creative arts and cultural tourism), and DJAKITJ (bush foods). DJAARA navigates systemic barriers, builds bridges, and finds ways to do things the Dja Dja Wurrung way. In November last year, DJAARA celebrated 10 years since the signing of their Recognition and Settlement Agreement with the State of Victoria. They reflected on the long journey to get there, and the decade of incredible achievements following that significant signing. A year on, they are the Telstra Business of the Year. They will continue to implement their vision for Dja Dja Wurrung People, Culture and Country – and to create positive outcomes for the broader community in Central Victoria. This recognition also provides a unique opportunity to make a positive impact for other mobs – in Victoria and nationally. Congratulations, DJAARA!

Dr. Graham Lauridsen, Veterinarian at Tropical Vets, talking about Vets warnings Queenslanders to protect pets against deadly disease this wet season. With the wet season fast approaching in Far North Queensland, veterinarians are urging dog owners to take proactive steps to protect their pets from leptospirosis, a dangerous and often deadly disease that becomes more prevalent during heavy rains. Leptospirosis is spread through water contaminated by the urine of infected wildlife or rodents, referred to as reservoir hosts. For dogs, a simple walk through a puddle or drinking from a creek can lead to exposure. The disease is particularly serious, with high fatality rates even with treatment. As cases are expected to rise during the rainy season, veterinarians are emphasising the need for preventative actions such as vaccination to keep pets safe. Global veterinary guidelines now classify protection against leptospirosis as essential in areas like Far North Queensland, where the disease is widespread. For more information and advice on protecting your dog from leptospirosis this season, contact your local vet.
