National Talk Black 150424
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Dr. Sam Osborne and Professor Kathy Paige, Co-researcher and UniSA Associate Director of Regional Engagement and UniSA Adjunct Associate, talking about how silence is not an option for First Nations’ content in Australian schools. Authentic and sometimes confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content is helping the next generation of Australian teachers be more socially responsible and inclusive, say University of South Australia experts. In a UniSA study, researchers found that pushing pre-service teachers outside their comfort zones helped educate them about the injustices faced by First Nations’ people – including racism, prejudice and discrimination – and to more confidently integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content into their lessons.
Chris Croker, Co-Chair of the First Nations Clean Energy Network, talking about how the “Future Made in Australia Act” must include First Nations. The First Nations Clean Energy Network welcomes Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s plans for a “Future Made in Australia Act” but cautions this must not be at the expense of, nor take for granted, First Nations consent. Australia’s energy transition – the bedrock of the vision in the Future Made in Australia Act and the economy based on clean energy and manufacturing – will only happen at the pace and scale required with First Nations as partners in the development and planning.
Uncle Kenneth McLean, Dingaal clan member and Walmbaar Aboriginal Corporation Chairperson, talking about the discovery of Australia’s oldest pottery rewrites understanding of Aboriginal maritime history. Traditional Owners and researchers report on the oldest securely dated pottery discovered in Australia, located at Jiigurru (Lizard Island Group) on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Australia. This significant finding challenges previous notions that Aboriginal Australian communities were unaware of pottery manufacture before European settlement, instead suggesting a rich history of long-distance cultural exchanges and technological innovation long before British arrival.
