NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 14/08/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Renae Nona and Joy Tapau, Artists and Designers, talking about the Cape Artists taking Country to Catwalks. This year, four artists from Northern Peninsula Area Arts Centre have designed a Country-inspired tropical collection from silks, linen, and cotton wearable art garments, and accessories, to strut Darwin’s sold-out catwalk shows – on their road to building a sustainable enterprise model. Now based in the Northern Peninsula Area of Cape York, Renae works out of the NPA Art Centre with the other artists showing their fashions on the catwalks of Darwin. The event builds on the growing textile design movement in remote Indigenous communities that aims to build sustainable economic opportunities.

Krystal De Napoli, National Science Week Ambassador, talking about National Science Week 2024. This week is National Science Week, and with more than 1,500 events happening right across the country, it’s a great chance for us all to learn more about science in the world around us, to ‘do’ some science, and to meet scientists. Krystal is an Astrophysicist, Award-winning Author, Radio Host and Science Communicator who is passionate about introducing the learnings from First Nations astronomy into our classrooms, encouraging more students to understand the connection between sky and country, and how a glance at a single constellation in the sky can tell us about current local animal behaviour, seasonal change, the availability of food sources, and impending weather patterns. National Science Week is happening from now until this Sunday. To find an event near you, check out the link below!

Alethea Beetson, Curator of “Meet Your Maker”, talking about Meet Your Maker taking on the 2024 Brisbane Festival. Set in the fictional universe of Queen’s City this story re-imagines a world where Indigenous communities were given their land back. In another time, we get to see what might happen if we had gone down a different path, if Indigenous pop culture was the norm and not the token. A one-woman tour de force performance that traverses live music, video, and monologue forms. Alethea will be at the Underground Theatre over the Brisbane Festival.
