NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 14/04/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Iconyx, Indigenous Artist, talking about the Release of her Powerful Cover of Archie Roach’s ‘Mulyawongk’, and Announces Debut Album. Rising First Nations artist ICONYX released her debut single, “Mulyawongk”, a powerful cover of Archie Roach’s iconic ballad and the first from recently released album Blak on Trak, via Skinnyfish Music. This is a momentous time for the East Kimberley artist as she not only debuts this emotional tribute, but took to the stage at Perth Festival to open for renowned singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara. The release of “Mulyawongk” holds special significance for ICONYX, as she has received explicit permission from Archie Roach himself to perform and reimagine the track. Just a couple of weeks before his passing, Roach heard her version and said, “ICONYX has taken this song to another level.” Since then, her cover of the song has remained completely unchanged to honour the version that he loved and approved via his then-manager, Jill Shelton. ICONYX, a 17-year-old emerging artist from the East Kimberley, navigates the world without sight. Her storytelling, deeply influenced by her family roots of Kukatja, Pintupi mob, and the life growing up in the city on Whadjuk, Noongar Boodja, invites listeners into a unique sonic journey. As a passionate songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and co-producer, ICONYX crafts music through a deep connection to tactile sound, offering sighted audiences an immersive and powerful experience. David Crosbie, Community Council for Australia CEO, talking about the Brand New Data Highlighting Deep Concerns About What Is Happening to Charities at A Local and National Level in Australia. A major new report from the Community Council for Australia (CCA) – which represents charities and non-profits across the country – has been released. The Community Council for Australia (CCA) is an independent non-political member-based organisation supporting charities and the not-for-profit sector in Australia. A massive sample size of 4,601 representative voters were polled about a range of issues. The sample has revealed there is deep concern about what is happening to charities on a national and local level. Community Council for Australia CEO David Crosbie says many charities are being absolutely swamped with rising costs and increased cost of living issues as well as endless red tape.
