NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 14/03/2025

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Anthony Townsend, Program Leader (Murray Darling) – Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), talking about the Innovative Technology Installed in Menindee To Restore Native Fish Passages. The Minns Labor Government is trialling Fishheart; a state-of-the-art temporary fish passage technology in the Lower Darling-Baaka River near Menindee, western NSW. The goal of this initiative is to test options to connect the Northern and Southern Basin and reduce the accumulation of fish, as part of the Government’s response to the Office of the NSW Chief Scientist and Engineer (OCSE) independent review into the March 2023 mass fish kill. Australian native fish need to migrate to feed, breed and seek new habitat but due to the introduction of barriers to fish passage, like dams and weirs, fish migration pathways have been impacted. The aim of the project is to test options to connect sections of the river, thereby helping move some fish out of the Menindee town weir pool to complete their life cycle and reducing the biomass and associated risks for water quality and fish kills. Dr. Ben Arthur, CSIRO CAPSTAN and ITSS Program Manager, talking about the CSIRO Science Ship that has Students Sailing into Future Careers. Thirty university students and trainers from across Australia will get the training experience of a lifetime when they take to the seas for a circumnavigation of Tasmania aboard CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator. The 10-day voyage is part of an innovative tertiary sea training program called CAPSTAN, the Collaborative Australian Postgraduate Sea-Training Alliance Network, which is being delivered in partnership with Australia’s national science agency, marine science industries, universities and government. The CAPSTAN program addresses a gap in how marine science education is delivered in Australia and will expose marine science students from 16 Australian universities to life and work onboard CSIRO’s advanced ocean research vessel. It offers a national approach to applied teaching and learning excellence in marine science and wider science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The voyage will immerse students in the full suite of marine science operations, from atmospheric and oceanographic studies to surveys of deep-sea ecosystems and marine life. Dr. Ben is responsible for assisting in managing both the CAPSTAN sea training program and the Indigenous Time at Sea Scholarship (ITSS).
