NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 13/08/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Tyrone Kolbe, Outdoor Skills 4Kids Managing Director, talking about the outdoor education program giving Woorabinda high school students a reason to attend classes. Tyrone Kolbe is a Queensland outdoor survival skills expert who has engaged students with this unique program. From natural navigation using the sun to learning about native bush tucker from trees just metres outside the school, students are embracing the concept in numbers. The outdoor education program at Wadja Wadja High School in the central Queensland community of Woorabinda is boosting attendance rates and changing young lives.

Jess Davis, National Director of the SNAICC Community Partners team, talking about the First Nations playgroup pilot set to support Indigenous children and families during early childhood. At least 13 Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations across the country will share in more than $2.1 million through the pilot, funding which will provide accessible and affordable spaces, resources and opportunities for First Nations children to play together and for parents and carers to seek social and parenting support. SNAICC – National Voice for our Children will partner with the federal government to support the implementation of the program.

Ben Rosenquist, Queensland Public Trustee (QPT) Cairns Assistant Regional Manager, talking about why advance life planning is important for First Nations people. A recent study commissioned by the Queensland Public Trustee revealed that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 57% less likely to understand their options and choices when it comes to advance life planning. Having important legal documents in place – such as a Will, Enduring Power of Attorney and Advance Health Directive – ensures people can have a say in the legacy they leave behind, protects them from financial elder abuse, and ensures they can have their say in medical treatment preferences.
