Associate Professor Joel Townsend, Director of Monash Law Clinics, talking about Monash University launches Justice Bus to bridge legal access gaps. Monash University has launched a new program that will provide free legal education and support to regional and remote communities across Victoria. Named the Justice Bus, the initiative comprises a mobile legal clinic, staffed by Monash Law students and supervised by experienced legal practitioners, that will bring education and support to Victorians who would otherwise face barriers to accessing legal information. The Justice Bus program is part of Monash’s commitment to social justice and community service. The Justice Bus has travelled to various regional locations throughout Victoria, offering services in areas such as family law, tenancy disputes, and debt recovery. It also provides education and resources on legal rights, helping to empower communities with the knowledge to navigate the legal system. Monash Law is collaborating with local community organisations and legal aid services to ensure the program is tailored to the specific needs of each community.

Senator Jana Stewart, Labor Senator for Victoria, talking about the Report released on the economic opportunities for First Nations Australians. First Nations Australians are significant contributors to Australia’s economy but access to finance and capital is limiting their economic empowerment and financial wellbeing. These are the findings of the Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs report on its inquiry into economic self-determination and opportunities for First Nations Australians. The report calls for a fundamental reframing of the First Nations economic narrative – one that embraces broader economic and fiscal policies. All levels of government, financial institutions, and investors must strengthen existing, and develop new, instruments to enhance First Nations people’s access to finance and capital. Financial institutions should remove impediments to responsible lending and capital flow to First Nations people.
