NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 11/04/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Kagara Maling, Indigenous Model, talking about his modeling career since appearing in the 2024 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) Fashion Show and CIAF’s call for this years show. After responding to CIAF’s call for models ahead of the 2024 event, Mr Maling travelled from his home in Gadigal/Sydney to Gimuy/Cairns, reuniting with family and finding himself under the bright lights. Following a two-week rehearsal phase, he was ready and confidently walked before a captivated audience, showcasing a series of stunning designs by Queensland’s First Nations fashion designers. Since his debut at the CIAF, Mr Maling has landed a range of roles, including a position as an extra on the iconic Australian television show Home and Away. His growing resume now includes modelling campaigns, music video appearances, and television roles that highlight his versatility as a performer. His return to Gimuy/Cairns in 2025 will see him again in the Tanks Arts Centre ‘round’ spotlight as a featured performer in CIAF’s much-anticipated Look & Listen Fashion Performances. Kagara Maling’s deep connection to culture, rooted in Gidimay, Yidinji, Worimi, and South Sea Islander heritage, fuels his artistic journey. Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) has issued a call for aspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander models to showcase up to 100 designs across 12 wearable art and designer collections in the organisation’s anticipated annual Fashion Performances in July. Congratulations, Kagara! For more information about CIAF’s Look & Listen Fashion Performances, submit a model EOI (closes 2 May 2025), visit the link below!

Dr Clinton Schultz says now more than ever, it is vital that commentary is accurate, respectful, and mindful of the social and emotional wellbeing of First Nations communities. The Respectful Election Guidelines have been co-developed by some of Australia’s leading First Nations mental health groups, including the Australian Indigenous Psychologists Association (AIPA), Indigenous Allied Health Australia (IAHA), Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia, Thirrili and Black Dog Institute. The Respectful Election Guidelines call on politicians to: Set the standard for respectful debate, Promote truth and honesty, Prioritise wellbeing, Foster unity and Lead by example. And The Good Yarn Guidelines urge journalists to: Challenge deficit narratives, Use respectful and precise language, Prioritise First Nations voices, Be trauma-aware and Follow ethical guidelines.
