Thomas Callaghan, CEO of Indigenous Conference Services (ICS), talking about ICS upcoming “First Nations Speakers Bureau”. ICS is an Indigenous-owned enterprise committed to closing the gap in Indigenous health and well-being. ICS operates independently and without government funding. Their mission centers on prioritizing First Nations culture and self-determination. The “First Nations Speakers Bureau” is a stellar line up of deadly First Nations Keynote speakers. They aren’t just experts in their fields but also cultural ambassadors and storytellers who bring a unique perspective to the conference.
Deborah Belyea, 2024 NAIDOC Week Poster Winner, talking about her 2024 National NAIDOC Week Poster win. The National NAIDOC committee are thrilled to announce artist Deb Belyea as the winner of the 2024 NAIDOC Week Poster Competition. Deb’s design captivated the National NAIDOC Committee and perfectly captured the meaning of the 2024 National NAIDOC Week theme Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud. The winning entry is titled, ‘Urapun Muy’ (pronounced Oorr-up-oon Mooy), and means ‘One Fire’ in the Kalaw Kawaw Ya (pronounced Kull-ow Koww-ow Yah) dialect. ‘Urapun Muy’ depicts the rich, multifaceted tapestry that makes up who we are as Blak, Loud and Proud mob. The artwork shows ancestors hands placing an ember into a burning fire. This ember, and the fire, represents the sharing of cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. The National NAIDOC Committee and Kmart Group are proud to announce that Kmart and Target has once again been appointed the Official National NAIDOC Week Poster Distribution Partner for 2024. National NAIDOC Week Posters distributed across all Kmart, K hub and Target stores nationwide from early June. The National NAIDOC Poster competition is an iconic feature of National NAIDOC Week and has a rich and significant history beginning in 1967 when the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) first began producing posters. Congratulations, Deborah!
Mark Townend , CEO of Spinal Life Australia, talking about how the Australian Government is being urged to lead the change in accessible tourism. The Australian tourism sector is one that consistently booms with the GPD from tourism reaching $63 billion the past financial year, with $8 billion of the spend attributed to those living with disability, indicating the sheer demand for accessible tourism. In fact, approximately nine-million-day trips are taken each year by people living with a disability; accounting for more than one-fifth of all day trips, indicating the sheer extent of tourism activities undertaken. Mark says due to the success of 2023 nominated as Queensland’s Year of Accessible Tourism, it’s time to expand this nationally to ensure the tourism sector is pushed toward inclusivity throughout Australia. It’s important to continue the momentum for positive change in this sector and make tourism accessible for all so international and domestic visitors alike can experience Australia’s extraordinary attractions.
