On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Uncle Glen Miller, Founder of Butchulla Men’s Business Aboriginal Association for Butchulla Warriors’ Memorial – A Journey of Reconciliation, talking about their 2024 Queensland Reconciliation Awards win, in the Premier’s Reconciliation Award and Community category. An association behind the Fraser Coast’s ‘First Contact’ war memorial, dedicated to the Butchulla men who died defending Butchulla Country, that is pivotal in supporting young Butchulla men in the Fraser Coast community in their life journey and supporting their link to Country. Now in its 21st year, the awards have recognised more than 100 initiatives and partnerships that have championed reconciliation.
John Leha, AbSec CEO, talking about transitioning to Aboriginal community-controlled care. Transition involves shifting the support of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care from non-Indigenous organisations to Aboriginal community-controlled organisations. Carers of Aboriginal children and the service staff who support them came together in Penrith to discuss the ongoing transition project. It is partly about self-determination but mostly motivated by a desire to see Aboriginal children and young people supported by those who understand their culture needs and ensuring their connection to community.
Leanne Brown, spokesperson for Apunipima and Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service for Cape York Kidney Care, talking about their 2024 Queensland Reconciliation Awards win, in the Health and Wellbeing category. Their health program, is the first of its kind in Australia to combine First Nations health practitioners with rural communities to provide kidney care for people with or at risk of developing chronic kidney disease. The awards recognise and celebrate inspiring initiatives and organisations that demonstrate an unwavering commitment to reconciliation during National Reconciliation Week.
