NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 08/05/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Tracey Ninyette, Commissioner for Children and Young People WA, talking about the Thousands of WA students to share their views as Speaking Out Survey begins in Broome. The Commissioner for Children and Young People’s team is hitting the road this week to deliver the Speaking Out Survey (SOS) to thousands of students across Western Australia. From Esperance to Wyndham, Bidyadanga to Laverton and beyond, the team is visiting schools from government, independent and Catholic education systems, seeking a broad cross-section of children and young people’s views on their wellbeing. Topics covered in the survey include mental health, education, community life, hopes for the future, physical health and safety. SOS in 2025 will be the third survey in the series, with a larger sample size of up to 20,000 children and young people from various regions of WA. The data gathered offers a comprehensive view of the evolving health and wellbeing landscape of children and young people over time. SOS is an anonymous survey conducted within schools across Western Australia, with research and ethics approval from the Department of Education (DoE), Catholic Education WA (CEWA), Association of Independent Schools WA (AISWA), and the Western Australian Aboriginal Health Ethics Committee (WAAHEC) including its sub-groups. Danielle Snelling, Motherless Daughters Australia Co-Founder and Executive Officer, talking about how Bereaved daughters shouldn’t be ignored this Mother’s Day. The commerciality of Mother’s Day focuses on mums who are physically here – however with 1.2 million daughters across Australia having lost their mum before turning 44, bereaved daughters are feeling excluded, due to avoidance and a lack of understanding from the community. Research shows social support is crucial for those who are grieving, and not-for-profit Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA) is urging Aussies to get clued up on how to have informed conversations about grief to help bereaved people feel less isolated. Motherless Daughters Australia’s aim is to connect and support women, girls and families experiencing the distress and lifelong impact caused by mother loss. We believe that with support, guidance, and resources, motherless daughters feel less alone and more supported in their life journey. You can find out more via the link below!
