NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 07/11/2024

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Dr. Benedict Scambary, Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) Chief Executive Officer, talking about how the landmark sentence at Gunlom Falls confirms the importance of sacred site protection. The NT Local Court has fined Parks Australia $200,000 marking the end of a long-running legal battle over unauthorised works near the sacred site of Gunlom Falls. In 2020, the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) commenced a prosecution in the NT Local Court alleging that the Director of National Parks (DNP) undertook works on the Gunlom Falls sacred site in Kakadu National Park against the advice of custodians and without authorisation from the AAPA under the Sacred Sites Act. At the two-day hearing at Gunlom Falls, the DNP pled guilty and was sentenced to a $200,000 fine, the largest penalty ever awarded under the Sacred Sites Act.

Senior Sergeant Glen De Lai and Stephen Grant, Whichway Yarning with Edmonton Police, talking about Cyclone Season. Cyclones are a part of life for people living in Queensland’s coastal areas. Queensland cyclone season is officially from 1 November to 30 April, however we may experience cyclones at other times. Communities within 50 kilometres of the coastline from Bundaberg to Thursday Island, including the Gulf of Carpentaria are most susceptible to cyclones. However, accompanying wind and heavy rain from weakening cyclones can affect communities throughout all parts of Queensland. Authorities remind everyone to – Understand your Risk, Make a Plan, Pack a Kit and stay smart and safe during a disaster. More information see the link below!
