Professor Heidi Norman, UNSW Sydney’s Director of the Indigenous Land and Justice Research Group and Lead Researcher, talking about the ‘Transformative role’: Aboriginal land councils can help NSW reach renewable energy targets. A new report outlines how strategic support for Aboriginal Land Councils could unlock significant renewable energy capacity and accelerate progress toward net zero targets. The report, Local Aboriginal Land Council Powershift, was developed through a joint research initiative between UNSW Sydney and UTS, supported by an Australian Public Policy Institute Policy Challenge Grant. It presents a series of recommendations for the NSW Government to unlock the potential for Aboriginal land councils to host and own renewable energy on their own lands across the state. Across NSW, Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) manage 447 square kilometres of land, with a further 7438 square kilometres under claim. Despite this, Aboriginal participation in renewable energy projects has been minimal. You can find out more via the link below!
