Bernard Namok Jnr, Co-author of “Our Flag, Our Story: The Torres Strait Islander Flag”, talking about the release of his new book “Our Flag, Our Story: The Torres Strait Islander Flag”. Bernard was just a little boy when his dad, the late Bernard Namok Snr, designed the Torres Strait Islander Flag, a symbol of unity, shared identity and pride for all Torres Strait Islanders. This is the story of a flag and what it represents. A personal story that invites young readers to learn about the Torres Strait Islander peoples, place and culture. Our Flag, Our Story shares an essential piece of Australian and Torres Strait Islander history, accessible for all ages. Hunter Page-Lochard, “Waru” writer, talking about Bangarra Dance Theatre’s “Waru” to make a splash in QPAC’s Playhouse this June. A journey of survival and discovery with our heroine Migi the turtle, the contemporary saltwater Lagaw Kazil (Island Children) story is inspired by the totemic system of the green turtle, in an interactive and immersive introduction to Torres Strait Islander culture and dance for three- to eight-year-olds. Bangarra Dance Theatre will bring its delightful work for children, Waru – journey of the small turtle to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) from Wednesday 26 to Saturday 29 June for the school holidays.
Kenny Bedford, Reconciliation Australia Cairns-based Director, talking about this years National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June). National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Reconciliation Australia is the lead body for reconciliation in Australia. They inspire and build relationships, respect and trust between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. The 2024 NRW Theme is Now More Than Ever.
