NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 02/12/2025
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Tom Cameron, Cameron Law, talking about Process Unite Cultural Authorisation and Maja Agreement. Process Unite formalised our bid for a comprehensive settlement on behalf of all participating Traditional Owner groups on November 28 to 30 this year. The ceremony and celebrations were held at Mungalla Station on Nywaigi Country. All Traditional Owners within the Girringun community were invited to attend this historic event as we walk towards self-determination. The Authorisation ceremony also identified a formal negotiation team, with members as elected by their Traditional Owner groups. They were assisted by a support team including researchers, economists and governance advisors as required. This will ensure that priorities and programs are identified. This team will be placed with on-ground knowledge to address Close the Gap targets. The shared vision is for Traditional Owners to be the architects of their own future and create a self-determined legacy for their children’s children, that is no longer dependent upon government funding and annual hand-outs. Our Elders believe this is the only way to achieve genuine social equity and Close the Gap outcomes. You can find out more via the link below!

Thomas Dunsmore, Torres Strait Kaziw Meta CEO, talking about Torres Strait Kaziw Meta becomes first certified Indigenous boarding facility in Australia. After three years of sustained improvement across governance, boarder wellbeing, staff development, facilities and community engagement, Torres Strait Kaziw Meta (TSKM) has passed an independent audit for Australian schools and residences, marking a major milestone for safe and high-quality boarding in the Torres Strait. This milestone leads the way for the Indigenous boarding sector and is a big achievement for a remote Torres Strait boarding facility, made possible by the hard work and commitment of TSKM’s management committee, staff and boarders. The boarding facility now joins a growing cohort of schools certified against AS 5725, alongside Ascham School, NSW, Brisbane Boys’ College, Qld, Downlands College, Qld, Kincoppal Rose Bay, NSW and St Michael’s Collegiate School, Tas. Congratulations, Torres Strait Kaziw Meta! You can find out more via the link below!
Larissa Pickalla, Charles Darwin University (CDU) Senior Lecturer in Education and CDU First Nations Training and Teacher Education Hub Director, talking about New education hub launches to train more First Nations teachers. Charles Darwin University (CDU) has officially launched the First Nations Training and Teacher Education Hub, a collaborative initiative designed to grow the next generation of First Nations teachers, educators, and leaders across the Northern Territory. The Hub, which launches on December 2, will build partnerships between academics, First Nations organisations, the NT Department of Education and Training, and regional communities to meaningfully contribute to Closing The Gap initiatives. According to the Australian Council of Education Research, just 4.6 per cent of NT teachers identify as First Nations compared to 39 per cent of school students. Nationally, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people represent 1.3 per cent of teachers and 6 per cent of students. CDU Senior Lecturer in Education and Hub Director Larissa Pickalla said the launch marked a new chapter in how the NT would grow and sustain its teaching workforce. One of the key initiatives the Hub will utilise to increase cultural responsiveness in the nation’s teaching workforce is through a first-of-its-kind Associate Degree in First Nations Cultural and Language Education. The multidisciplinary degree combines units from education streams, linguistics, Indigenous Knowledges, and creative arts. Ms Pickalla likened it to accrediting practical industry experience towards a formal qualification. As the Hub cements its position as a powerful resource for the Australian education system, Ms Pickalla hopes to see more First Nations teachers in classrooms across the NT and Australia.
