NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 02/09/2024
On today’s National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Services we have:
Senator Jana Stewart, Chair of The Joint Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, talking about the Public hearing for inquiry into improving the economic self-determination for First Nations Australians. The Committee is looking forward to hearing firsthand from Victoria’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations at the forefront of business enterprise, about the barriers to and opportunities for economic development for First Nations people. Other First Nations organisations will provide insights into opportunities offered by Treaty and renewable energy projects for boosting the First Nations workforce and unlocking economic potential.
Councillor Raymond Kelly, Chairperson of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, talking about New South Wales’ Oldest Aboriginal Land Claim Finally Being Resolved. The Brewarrina Local Aboriginal Land Council (Brewarrina LALC) and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) are celebrating the resolution of the state’s oldest land claim. Lodged in 1984, the claim over the Brewarrina Common has been resolved by Aboriginal Land Agreement between Brewarrina LALC, NSWALC, and the NSW Government almost 40 years to the day. In resolution of the oldest outstanding claim, a number of very culturally significant places, as well as lands for economic activation will be transferred to Brewarrina LALC.
Bradley Dryburgh, Cystic fibrosis fighter, storyteller, podcaster, & ultra-marathon runner, talking about the new treatment hope for Australians with invisible illness that halves life expectancy. Earlier this month, life-changing cystic fibrosis (CF) modulator treatment, Trikafta, became available for children aged 2+ with at least one F508del mutation, on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in Australia. Prior to this announcement, families would need to spend $250,000 a year to access the treatment, which will now cost just $31.60 per prescription, or $7.70 with a concession card.
