National Talk Black 010524

On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:

Amelia Walker, Intake and Clinical Content Team Leader at Gidget Foundation Australia, talking about how over a third of parents feel validated through other parent’s stories. A common challenge expectant and new parents face is feeling alone in their journey, with data from Gidget Foundation Australia (GFA) revealing nearly a third (30%) of Aussie parents wish they had more support from the community around them. Yet data from GFA also shows an effective method of alleviating these feelings can be through online connection, with over a third (38%) of Aussie parents feeling validated when they hear stories from other parents. With the data also showing nearly half (46%) of Aussie parents with children under five say they have learnt useful parenting information from social media, GFA is launching series two of their podcast, 1 in 5 mothers, 1 in 10 fathers, in line with World Maternal Mental Health Day (1 May 2024). The podcast aims to utilise the powerful role of sharing lived experiences of perinatal mental health issues to reduce the stigma and help people open up to others. ABSTUDY is a payment available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are required to live away from the family home to study. Chris talks to parents about how to get through to the support that’s available, how they can find out if their eligible and how to apply.
