NATIONAL TALK BLACK – 01/10/2025 (REPEAT)
On todays National Talk Black via NIRS – National Indigenous Radio Service we have:
Jemma Townson, Jemena Senior Media and External Affairs Advisor, talking about Powering a safe place for those in need. Crisis accommodation will be expanded in Redfern, New South Wales, thanks to a $10,000 grant awarded to not-for-profit charity Cana Communities, from energy provider Jemena. The funding will help expand operations at St Francis House in Redfern, increasing crisis accommodation from four to six nights per week and adding a weekly community lunch. The initiative will provide shelter, meals, and support to an additional 1,040 people annually. Now in its seventh year, Jemena’s Community Grants Program has already provided about $870,000 in funding to 85 community groups. This includes $70,000 awarded earlier this year to initiatives supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You can find out more via the link below!
Bruce Hammond, Australian Land Conservation Alliance First Nations Engagement Host, talking about the ALCA25 Conference in Gimuy (Cairns) 7th-10th October. The Australian Land Conservation Alliance is a national peak body advancing nature conservation: they represent organisations doing on-ground work to protect, restore and manage nature on private and non-government land. The ALCA conference happens annually in a different location. This is the first time it’s come to Gimuy. It brings around 400 people together – conservation practitioners, First Nations leaders and land managers, policy and finance experts, government, and community members. It’s a chance to celebrate all the great work happening, make connections, and share knowledge that makes a real difference for nature, people and communities. It’s happening from 7-10 October. There’s optional workshops and field trips, on either end, and two days of session programming. Topics include culturally lead care for Country, nature finance, tourism, environmental markets, new tech and AI, next-gen conservation leadership, invasive species solutions. There’s over 130 speakers: a mix of local and national leaders, including from Indigenous Desert Alliance, Nari Nari Tribal Council, North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management, Kirirrkurra rangers, Tjamu Tjamu Aboriginal Corporation, Beemurra Aboriginal Corporation, Jabalbina, Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation, APN Cape York, and Daarba Land Trust. First Nations people can use the code FNEB for discounted registration. You can find out more via the link!
